Daytona Beach is another of Floridas
coastal cities that benefit from a micro-climate, where the ocean tempers
the heat or cold depending on the season. In winter, the temperate climate
is ideal for watching the action on the Speedway where mid-day temperatures
average in the upper 60s. Breezes off the coast warm the air with the
aide of the Gulfstream. The local temperatures rarely go below freezing
although about once or twice a decade the area is hit with a mid 20 degree
reading in the depths of winter! Coupled with the rain gauges which are
kept quite dry during the winter months, Daytona Beach is an ideal retreat
for snowbirds and young people alike. Almost anytime during the year is
an ideal time for boating, fishing and sunbathing.
Many may assume summers in Daytona Beach are unbearable. To the contrary,
the ocean moderates the temperatures, highs and lows normally vary by
less than 20 degrees in a day. About once or twice a decade the area may
hit the century mark on the thermometer. Water temperatures are usually
comfortable from late April through early November, which is ideal for
snorkeling, scuba diving and other water sports. Summer thunderstorms
drop their rain and pass on, leaving most of the day sunny and comfortable.
Hurricanes do occur on occasion, mostly in late summer or early fall,
on average happening less than once a quarter century. With the year averaging
70 degrees F, its no wonder so many people choose to visit Daytona
Beach year round.
